Well, I've succeeded in writing a proof-of-concept plugin that will play a TV show in iTunes. I was unable to reliably do this by any of the COM methods, because it would do silly things like open the video in the background, refuse to make it fullscreen, etc.

The only way I could get it to work was by calling Process.Start on the movie file itself, which would then open in iTunes fullscreen.

For some reason, when I tried Process.Start with QuickTimePlayer, it kept generating several -108 errors.

Anyway, I'm going to keep working on this. If I make any real progress, I'll post back here.

Take a look at the QuickTime API as well. It's available (for free) through Apple's Developer website. It might seem a bit onerous at first, but just playing a movie isn't all that onerous.

Great progress!

I haven't looked into that because I'm under the impression that if you don't have QuickTime Pro, you cannot view movies fullscreen. For that reason, I need to view them in iTunes.

If I'm wrong, and it's possible to do fullscreen without QT Pro, please let me know!

I've been working on the UI portion of the plugin, which is coming along rather nicely.

Ugh. The current QT API doesn't work with DRM-protected videos. All attempts to open the m4v file result in error -2126. So I think I need to resort to relying on iTunes itself to open the file.

Sigh.
