I recently decided to make a DVR out of one of my old computers (AMD 2.4Ghz 1GB DDR), and I found an ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV TV tuner card lying around my house. Reading some reviews on the card, they mostly agree that setup is a bitch, but the results are good.

Does anyone have any experience with this card? I'm going to try it out of course, since it is free and I have the spare time to waste right now. Any hints on making the setup go easier, or special ways of configuring the card or GB-PVR to get the best picture etc would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has had bad experience with this card, which card would you recommend I buy instead?

Sorry, but this card isnt compatible with GB-PVR. It lacks the required hardware MPEG2 encoder.

Thanks a bunch, you saved me a lot of time. Consequentially, what card would you recommend? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but I still want something that functions well.

Hauppauges 150 are used a lot, I guess they cost about $60 - 70, you have to be careful though, not all the packages are the same, with or without remote, with or without ir-blaster. So you better decide what you need exactly. Good luck
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

Like a previous poster said, watch what card you get, as even some of the low end Hauppauge are not hardware encoding cards either. Stick with a 150 or a 500 (dual tuners! way cool) and you will be fine.

Hauppauge Cards

I didn't need a remote or an ir blaster, so I bought the PVR150MCE, which does not include either: PVR150MCE

NPVR Rig: HP Laptop, 3rd Gen i7, 8gb DDR3, 250gb SSD (OS), Records to 6tb array on my server, Silicon Dust HDHomeRun PRIME
