This is way off topic from GB-PVR but...

I was transferring MiniDV to my computer (done it a lot already) and this time I started getting these gray blotches. They don't show in the Camera viewfinder/lcd display on playback, and not in WinDV while I capture. Only playback of the resulting AVI.

I was thinking that the camera's heads need cleaning...

What do you think? The Gray blacks are in the same spot, and they flash... I have no titling or effects on the camera...

I used to ask 'why?' Now I just reinstall...

You would think that if it were the heads of the camera it would show on the camera lcd and in windvd as well.
edit: so that that leads to a software-issue??

Are you compressing as you're capturing? I'd be tempted to try different software and encoders or just capture a few minutes in uncompressed (if that's not already what you're doing) to see if that makes a difference. If you can see what's "behind" the blocks when capturing it has to be something after that stage.

I'm not compressing, Just firewire, direct to Hard drive.

I was thinking software issue too. And so I'll be transferring the firewire card to my other computer and trying there too...

Let's say that it's fine on my second computer, which proves it's software...

I *think* I have the same codecs on both computers. What else could it be?

Use a different MiniDV media. Are you using the same one over and over. blank media.

Btw compression won't cause those grey blocks in the media transfer. Again it could be that the PC can't read the MiniDV media.

Thanks Tipster.

It happens on 4 different, brand new, record once tapes, different brands. (Sony, Memorex, and something else, I think)

It's also worked quite easily before...

I have not had the chance to try it another computer...
