Yes I've been using powerline a year now but without encryption.
Works great! No stuttering no problem at all.
You have to consider the distance between the two (or more) devices. Wiring distance and switches in between could considerably reduce the signal strength.

Hi interesting, I was debating going for the 200mbit versions.

Are you sure its wise not to have encrytion? Im not sure of the overheads at all!

The other thing Is I used X10 devices for home automation, im not sure what this will do to the speed of stuff. I asked netgear support regarding the 200mbit powerline technology and X10 and they said it should work but they have not tested - not very inspiring response.Big Grin

I know nothing about X10 but I'm pretty sure my powerline network isn’t encrypted.
With my 85Mb powwerline adapters I could have contemporary connected:
  • ADSL file download (not at full speed)
  • 2 MVP playing different shows
I have stutters or even MVP disconnections if while playing antivirus or other heavy CPU load task starts

it does sound like i wont have any problems then as i will only be using 1 MVP at once and the ADSL here is upto 8mbit (but I don't think ive ever downloaded at that speed anyway Big Grin ).

Thanks for your advice, I just need to decide on risking it with the X10 or not Smile

Not sure whether I'm suggesting this too late for you, but I'm using the 200 Mbps HDX101's from netgear, got them from this outfit:

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Sea...rch=hdx101
£67.66 (£ 57.58 ex VAT)

But you can get them from Dabs.com for not much more.

The only issue is that you would need to put a switch between an MVP and these units for some reason (search my threads), but that wouldn't push the price up too much, and would give you the 200 Mbps speed for about the same price. No overhead worries, and room for expansion. Been rock solid for me once I found that switch trick from mdnttoker.

Hi not too late, waiting for pay day to suss out my finances - and christmas is coming can I be buying for myself Smile. Ive also got a little PC problem at the moment so want to sort that out first - i.e. it won't boot without the bios check sum fowling and me having to reset it all. My TV card seems to have broken as well Sad

Anyway it seems cheaper to get them in a starter pack from dabs for 123.37 UKP :

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Qui...ationKey=0

Any offors on somewhere cheaper ? Big Grin

I wonder if I will actually get 200mbit from my onboard LAN adapter anyway and it will go down to 100 (I beleive it is a gig NIC).

I already have a switch built into my ADSL router @ 100mbit so I could make do mostly

Waiting for pay-day, yes, thats very familiar! Wink

Yes, the double pack from dabs would be better value, I remember now why I went to BBB, and that was to get a single unit as i needed three of them.

The 200 Mbps is purely between the HDX units and is theoretical, actual throughput for me is 120-160 MPS depending on the location and wiring each adapter is connected to, and the general wiring of your place.

I used three units for my setup, one connected directly to my GBPVR server (so I could place it in an out-of-the-way location), one connected to an output of my router switch (so the hdx network has external net access & DHCP server), and one connected to the MVP (via a switch - this step is very important for some reason, otherwise the MVP will keep crashing out!, next to the TV).
The HDX "network" affectively acts like a subnet, and the router switch is not involved in any of the GBPVR to MVP transactions, meaning it all runs nice and fast (and means general web browsing, BT etc are not affected) , the only limiting factor being the 100 Mbps NIC in the GBPVR server which is still more than enough for several MVP's running simultanously.

Overall I'm more than happy with this setup. I just wish netgear and/or haupauge would address the MVP network lockup issue (which is resolved by placing the switch between the MVP and HDX101). I've contacted them both and each blames the other's kit!

Good luck with yours, and I hope you get your other issues resolved!

I have the 85mb version. It's a fussy device. I had to play around with the electrical sockets. I have 3 (each faceplate has two sockets in them - if you know what I mean) in the room with my PC, and it had to be on the one with nothing else plugged in (i.e. one of the sockets has to be empty). The same in the room with my TV. It had to be alone for me to get the video working. Otherwise it was breaking up and unwatchable. It's mostly OK now - I get the occasional stutter and breakup. I hardly watch any video through the MVP these days. It's probably a combination of the occasional stutter and the DVR I have from my cable company.

Audio/pictures/net radio seems to work fine even if I had something else plugged in. I use this a lot. No problems.

Bottom line, for video, it's dicey, for everything else, it works fine. YMMV.
