Hi all
I just registered in this forum. I want to introduce my self / situation quickly.
I am working in germany currently until end of 2007. I don't understand german, and my wife is dying to watch her favorite TV show.

I am thingking of using my current pc and add some hardware/software to make it a pvr hooked on a friend cable at his house.
From time to time I will access my pvr pc remotely from germany to copy all those recorded tv show files and then view it on my pc in germany.

current pc spec (can not remember exactly):
- ABIT K7 mobo
- CPU AMD|T-BIRD 1.4GHZ/266 PGA
- 512 RAM
- VGA ABIT|SILURO GF2 MX400 64M SDRAM
- running win2k
- external 500 GB western digital mybook
- USB 2.0 PCI
- win 2000

my questions:
- can I use this computer to do just pvr and support remote access (maybe via ssh, vnc, ftp)
- which pvr card to use
- can gbpvr be set to create 1 hr file, to create smaller files to help ftp-ing.
- does the computer have enough power to support tv show recording and sending file via ftp to me in germany
- can I use vnc to remotely control gbpvr so I can change / modify tv show recording schedule?

thanks for all your help. I am about to go to austin texas where my home is for a 10 days roatation. I really want to be able to get all hardware by that time and built and test

any help / advice/ cofirmation / comment/ are appreciated

- can wait to build this pvr

Looks fine to me, more power is always better ofcourseWink
You'll need a tunercard e.g a hauppauge 150.
I would automatically transcode the recorded mpg's to e.g. xvid (I think ~350 MB/hr). Then you could schedule/view/download them through the EWA-plugin (Enhanced Web Admin).
Good luck.

Some more: I would try to get Wak On Lan (wol) going. So that you have more troubleshooting possibilities, through VNC. I don't know if your motherboard or nic supports it.

HI Htv thanks for the reply.
you said to trasnscode to xvid format. Is this feature part of gbpvr ?
about wake on lan, I have never used this feature before, can you elaborate more? I am thinking you mean the computer will go to sleep mode when not doing any recording? and I can wake it up when I am logging in?

thanks

Under the Processing tab in config there are options for transcoding programs after recording has finished.

About the wake-on-lan, it is a feature that you can use incase your computer is sleeping and you need to wake it up manually, allowing you to vnc or remote into your machine.

You can even wake it from being off.(Not asleep) Waking a system from the internet can be difficult, as not all providers (etc) might let through the so called magic packet to wake the machine.
In my case: I have a router (draytek) that I can login to through telnet and from there I can wake my machine. It's a bit of a hassle but I made a special webpage for that so that makes it a lot easier.
