Has anyone tired Windows Internet Connection Sharing with a wireless network card?

I have a internet connection on my gaming PC and would like to 'ad-hocly' connect this to a GBPVR box in another room. Both have wireless cards but even though I gone through the ICS wizard several times it doenst seem to make a wireless network. Neither box can see any new wireless networks when it scans for them. What I don't understand is that the wizard never asked me for a WEP/WPA password or network name/ESSID!? I assume it would need this

I'm not too fussed about the GBPVR having internet connection, I just want to be able to access it via VNC and GBPVR Web admin.

Any pointers greatfully received Smile

The ICS requires a working IP connection (wired or wireless) for sharing the internet connection.
Therefore ICS will NOT setup the connection between the two PCs, only enable the sharing of the internet connection and (if required) ICS will set some of the TCP/IP settings of the network adaptor in the PC with the internet connection to enable this.

To enable the link between the two PC's without a wireless access point you need to set up a ad-hoc wireless connection between the two PC's
YOu can NOT use WEP or any other protection on a ad-hoc connection.

Why don't you buy a very cheap wireless access point with firewall and a small switch. Its less hassle and better protection.

Ah that explains it then.

Any online guides/walthroughs for that?

Is this a limitation of XP or ad-hoc in general?

I was looking into ICS as it will be only for a few months before I move and most likley get a wired system setup. Think I might have too go down the router route (sic).

Followed that article through and it connects! But it seems a little USB wireless adapter dosnt have the 'ommph' to work through 40ft of air and 3 solid pre-war brick walls Sad

Think I will look into the cost of a access point/switch. Anything links to an example product or specs to look for?

How about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G ?

That is what I use and am happy with it. I don't have any thick walls or such to really block the signal.

Visit your local staples I got a netgear wg602 v3 access point for £19.91, also whilst your there see if they have the excellent NSLU2 (NAS) for £29.91. In the last month or two I got these two and a router all under £80.
