Hello,

So I am changing from ADSL to Telstra Cable for my internet - I currently have this modem / router combo
http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecifica...mID=338630
Belkin F5D7633-4

I want to know if I will still be able to use this for my router, and wireless access once I change to Telstra.

The Telstra modem connects via ethernet, so am I able to just plug the modem into one of the 4 ethernet ports (using x-over or otherwise) on the router and have it run the same? (pretty much bypassing the ASDL connection?)

Or do I have to buy another router? (annoying if I do)

Thanks

does you router have a WAN port (ethernet, not phone chable??)

If not, probably not...

I dont think it does - but maybe I will be surprised!

I didnt think I would be able to use it - it'll go into the box with other unused components which I may "have" use someday (at least if I put it away the GF doesnt try to make me get rid of it)

I guess if I move, I might have to go back ADSL anyway.

Better start looking for a new router then.

Thanks

I just got my sister in law to get a dlink DI-524 wireless router. But she's having real problems with the wireless part. They are on Xtra though.

I've been running a Linksys WRT54G (using non Linksys firmware DD-WRT) and a Dlink DI-624+ for a couple of years now with Telstra Cable with no problems.

Just some comments......

Went for a walk to DSE just before, and they had some customer return routers (mostly because people needed a modem as well)

Picked up a Netgear WGR614 v6 for $75 - I guess this will be OK - does anyone have any experience with these (ie dropping connections etc)

Thanks

BUt I thought that by having only the ADSL phone connection - that the router wopuld constantly try and connect using ADSL before it will be able to get gateway address etc - so it prob wouldnt connect to the internet.

I mean, If I kept my current config, then would I not lose port forwarding abilities? (mainly for GBPVR webadmin)

I dunno - I'll try both scenarios (while I still have my ADSL line) and see what happens, I can return the other router (although, it is a lot "prettier" than my current one - not my words!)

Thanks

This all depends on how the Telstra box works......and how much you understand about TCP/IP networking.

The theory is this...

Assuming you can manually configure the Private networks of both your old ADSL box and your new Telstra box, do the following...

Suppose your current ADSL box is configured for private network 172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 - in my experience, the box itself will assume the address 172.16.0.1 which is common. This is your current gateway address.

In this case, manually configure it to use 172.16.0.99 (for example).

Configure the Telstra box to use the same 172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 private network. At this point, if the Telstra box automatically assumes the address of 172.16.0.1 then you now have your new gateway out through the Telstra network. If not, manually configure it that way.

If you statically assign the IP addresses for your home machines then ignore the next part.

If you're using DHCP then disable the DHCP server on your ADSL box. Enable DHCP on the Telstra modem. If your ADSL box forwards DHCP requests across ports then you're in business - it should do as it's on the same private network.

Theoretical result...

Your home machines will be looking to use 172.16.0.1 as a gateway (the Telstra box). At this point, any attempts to establish a connection to the outside world will be addressed to it.

The ADSL box is now 172.16.0.99 (or whatever) and will see anything addressed to 172.16.0.1 simply as internal traffic and won't attempt to route it out through its ADSL port.

I'm not a network guru but that's how I understand it but it does depend on how the two boxes work and their configuration capabilities etc.

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks four help here. I have had a look at the TCL website, and I dont think it's too promising:

Quote: The cable modem has no IP address of its own and cannot be connected to, or managed in any way, from your computer. TelstraClear provides a single real-world IP address with each cable connection and cannot provide more.

So - they use pretty much a box to split the incoming signal , and my fixed IP will be at the Telstra side. Oh well.

Cheers
