I got a basic question. I am running a media box connected to HD TV via DVI. The Video Card is running in 1080i mode to my TV. If I play a DVD in this mode would it essentially be up converting the DVD to 1080i? I might be able to toss my (badly working) VINC up converting DVD player. Let me know what you think, I am new to his media box. Ideas.

Wants hella cool is, I have my GBPVR running on a server in another part of the house and my media box also running GBPVR can see the databases and play the media on that server from my media box.. It’s like I am sitting in front of GBPVR on the server.

THANKS GBPVR!!! SOFTWARE ROCKS!!!

I am assuming that by "media box" you mean a PC running GB-PVR in client mode?

the basic answer to your question is yes. but I have a few more questions on your setup.

What type of HDTV do you have, and what inputs does it take?
I am assuming that you are driving the TV at its native resolution.

what dvd decoder are you using? and do you have any post processing software installed? because that will basically dictates how good the upscaling will be.

Hay Ted. Yea, my media box is a Shuttle Box (AMD 2600+, 1GIG Ram) running XP Pro. I am running it on a Rear Projection 65" HD TV using DVI inputs. The TV is capable of running HD at 1080i, 720p. The card is an ATI 9800 with DVI outputs. I just bought a Firefly remote (very nice tool) and got most of everything working EXECPT the DVD part. When I try to play a DVD GBPVR crashes and even Media Player won’t play. I suspect it’s with, like you said, the decoder. The one on there now is a cheep free one, so the decoder sucks I am sure. What one do you recommend? Also what do you mean by "post processing"? Like what Process I am loading up on the box, firefly for example?

Thanks for replying to my post, anymore help would be appreciated. I’m getting more interested in this media box on my TV more than I thought I would.

That decoder is probably not capable of playing CSS encrypted content. Most people use cyberlink, nvidia or intervideo decoders for playing DVDs .

as sub said...

let me know what model TV you have, I will see what I can find out about the best format video to send to it...

FWIW I use NVIDIA PureVideo for my MPEG2/DVD decoder, and dont worry about having an ATI card, I have one as well, it works fine in software mode, and I believe it can even use DXVA, so you can take advantage of your video card to some degree.

I've got an fx5200 gforce & a radeon 9550.
Both use about the same CPU resources when playing back Mpeg2 as far as I can tell.

Ummm well, this particular DVD I was testing with does not have any CSS content. Rolleyes
But I'm going to try to get a intervideo decoder on there to play the VOB's.

I'll have to go home and check out the model, I'll get back to you on that.
