Help with 1394 Firewire Input

So I installed gbpvr on my dell 4300. I can see the TV Stream in VLC fine, I downloaded External Recorder but how do I configure it? When I launch GBPVR I get a black screen, and same thing with pvrx2. Anyways, I have an explorer 4250HD, can someone help me set this up?
