I have now nicknamed my GBPVR server as "the single point of failure".

I had a spare hour or so after work so I thought I would do a bit of "server maintainance", the usual stuff, virus scans and windows updates, checking logs etc. I also wanted to remove an unused HVR1300 tuner to install in another machine (for some investigation for this thread http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post231916 ).

6:15pm Do windows update, OK... says I need to restart to complete the updates. OK . I turn off the computer, open the case ( blow off the dust!) pull out the spare tuner. Switch computer back on ...

6:30pm Fans whir fot 2 seconds then it shuts down.
What !!? Cycle the power, press the on button...

Nothing,Nada...Dead. No fans no lights. Dead.

AAaaaGGhhh !!!

This pc is my home server. GBPVR server, Webserver, Mailserver, Internet firewall and gateway.
And its 6:30pm and its dead, and my wifes favourite soap starts in 30 minutes!!

It must be Power supply failed , or motherboard damaged, maybe PSU has damaged motherboard.

I try reseting the CMOS and reseating all the plugs but no good.

I have some spare power supplies but they are all old 200-250Watters not big enough to replace the suspect 400W unit. Then I remember Maplin have a big shop about 10mins drive away and they are open till 8:00pm.

6:35pm Jump in the car and 20mins later I'm back home with a new 480W PSU.

7:00pm Soap about to start. Frantic swapping out of PSU - damn those plugs are fiddly when your in a hurry.

7:03pm I hit the power button. Still dead. WHAT !!?? then suddenly new PSU kicks into life and ...

YEAHHH!!! Fans whir disks spin up, server beeps and boots up. Big Grin

7:04pm I see the server processes start up, but the GBPVR tray Icon is staying white, it should be green and recording by now. Then I see the clock is out by about 30mins. Resetting the CMOS must have stopped it. I correct the time, the GBPVR Icon turns Green and "Emmerdale" is being recorded.

Pheww. Panic over...

Glad you are up and running. Next time you have a chance you may want to check the battery on the motherboard to see if it is discharged.

My wife would have just waited for the omnibus edition at the weekend. Smile

Having said that, I always assume that a 'bit of server maintainance' is likely to end up in a complete rebuild anyway :p (most of my stuff is recycled client's machines - sbs2000 server machine is a ten year old 266 MHz PII)

NO NO NO NO NO!

NO NO and a thousand times NO!

Don't EVER think that it won't take long to just rework your GB-PVR box if there's anything important due to record in the next couple of hours.

Particularly if it requires a power down and fiddling with the hardware internals.

Especially if you have multiple tuner cards and there are several programmes set to record.

Nope, no sirreee. Been there- not going to play that game again.

Cheers,
Brian
