I've set -m pal for mvpmcx2 and that should correspond to a width and height of 720x576, right? So I put those settings in config.xml.

But on the PCH I get a too large picture that sort of overscans. I miss a little on the outer edges. So what is a correct width and height setting for the "-m pal" flag?

Really what is the correspondance between width/height in mvpmcx2 and in config.xml? The survival guide says they should "match" but obviously there is more to it?

Code:
<MVPClientType>PCH</MVPClientType>
      <MVPWidth>580</MVPWidth>
      <MVPHeight>500</MVPHeight>
      <MVPOffsetX>40</MVPOffsetX>
      <MVPOffsetY>34</MVPOffsetY>
      <MVPSendIncrementalUpdates>true</MVPSendIncrementalUpdates>
      <MVPTranscodeTS>false</MVPTranscodeTS>
      <MVPTranscodeAVI>false</MVPTranscodeAVI>
      <MVPTranscodeWMV>false</MVPTranscodeWMV>
      <MVPTranscodeMKV>false</MVPTranscodeMKV>

But you'll need to tweek the OffsetX and y

I don't think you can use someone else's settings as a rule, after all gbpvr does already have sub's default. This is why I recommended installing the MVPPosition plugin.

As for the notes It is difficult to match the screen size on the tv when you can't really calculate overscan position, so I suggest leaving it a the default for all the modes. For 480/576 (i or p) for purists you can try to see if the 720 x 480/576 works too. On my machine I can use 640x576 as svideo (scaled at 480i) and 720x480 as 480p. To override the defaults the option is --display 720x480.

What I don't recommend doing is basing the decision on the resolution of the TV. If it says that it does 720p/1080i at 1024x768 don't think you have to set it as --display 1024x768

I have an old CRT 16:9 TV with analog S-video in, so I don't have to match a specific resolution as with a LCD-TV with HDMI. Also the overscan on this telly is minimal since I have adjusted it myself to the bare minimum so overscan should not affect anything really. (I hope)

Actually he command line I have is -m pal --display 720x576
and config.xml: width=720, height=576

...which gives me a slight overscan result. Is the overscan due to my telly overscanning or is it due to setting the wrong command line or config params?

I don't know about overscanning, but the settings are only wrong if your monitor can't handle it, and those are valid options.

Sorry if I am a little slow...
But I still don't understand how the two options correlate. And I hoped I would not have to resort to trial and error to find out what it does.

Lets start at the beginning. I assume the GB-PVR is the server and mvpmcx2 is the PCH client app.

So the mvpmcx2 needs to have a command line setting that tells PCH to output proper video data on it's output. Right? Setting it to -m pal should suffice as this set s-video to PAL composite (in PCH language). In the latest version of mvpmcx2 you are autodetecting what I have set in PCH setup so even -m pal is not necessary?

So to get the picture to fill the screen without overscan I need to fiddle with the MVP params in config.xml? Or if the overscan really comes from the TV anyway - then I need to adjust that further.

Conclusion: If there is no overscan in the TV and I set 720x576 in config.xml and corresponding in command line then the result should be a perfect fit?

Sigh, I really only need a yes or now on this if I have understood it right...

I think the problem is that you are misinterpreting the --display parameter which is just defining the size of the screen's framebuffer. The signal is always going to be 576i but you can go right up to 1920x1080 and GBPVR will send all those pixels and the sigma chip convert it.

What is wrong with using MVPPosition?

Ok,
so setting it to 720x576 should make the sigma chip output the video as it receives it without scaling.

Nothing, I will try it out.

Thanks for all help.
Really setting different width/height in the command line versus config.xml was what got my head spinning. It still does a little... In my mind those settings should be equal and everything match. I don't really understand where the discrepancy creeps in. (That I got overscan).
