tru2way is cable labs, afaik its something that the fcc mandated or its something that was suppered by the fcc wanting all cable co's to use 2 way cable cards. I don't think that we will be saying goodbye to the cable box for a very long time, they will just all have cable cards in the future. Now all we need as some way to use the ati cable card tuner outside of mediacenter and we would be set.

are they still sold integrated? in the beginning, they only were available in a MCE setup, it took 2 HW guys from m$ & support from ATI to install & they still had not gotten it to run properly...

afaik they still are but I think ati wants to sell them on there own, but I dont think the cable co's will set you up with it unless its a certified system. I suppose in the future those restrictions might go away but its hard to say. I think all we need is some one who has one to try "some things" with it and see whats possible. If I remember correctly the thing shows up like a network device so maybe its possible to get it working similar to the way the hdhomerun interfaces with a computer. I'm sure it wont be easy but I bet it could be done in time.
The other device that similar to look forward to is directv computer tunner, I hope it will be usable out side of mce but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

I forgot to mention I dont think they have it working completely yet, I think there is some one here that is a tester for microsoft that probably knows better than me perhaps he will chime in.

I would love to play with one and try "some things" but that is on toy that I just cannot justify the cost.
