I am assuming that the
USB dongle has a built in IR receiver - Can somebody confirm?

If the answer is yes, can i pair this usb dongle with MCE remote?

I'm pretty sure the built in IR Receiver will only work with a Hauppauge remote.

The MCE remotes typically come with their own IR Receiver.

Bummer....

Sub, if i buy a MCE remote, I really do not need Hauppauge remote for using GBPVR - Am I right?

And is there a "best of breed" MCE remote that you can suggest?

I would say make sure it's compatible with HIP or Eventghost and if you can get one with the coloured multimedia keys.

the remote looks nice...but it doesn't seem to have an IR blaster for use with set top boxes.

As for HIP and Eventghost they are third party programs which allow you to program your MCE remote to control any windows application you want. I think they are key to a good HTPC. This is why it is important to have a HIP/Eventghost compatible remote - unfortunately I cannot tell for sure if it's compatible.

Ok I understand now.

Can you suggest a good remote that I can buy with the features you have listed? Off course I need the IR blaster as well.

you can get the MCE remote...there are different versions however. There are two versions with the coloured multimedia keys but only one is compatible - look it up in the wiki or the HIP site. On the other hand, lots of people use the MCE remote without the multimedia keys and don't seem to complain - I'm just used to having them.

I currently use the remote wonder 2 - which you can buy used but not for retail sale. I think the RW plus is better as it's X10 compliant. I like these remotes because they are RF rather then IR. I have various MCE remotes and blasters for STB blasting when I get to it.

Sorry can't get into details. That said, $20 for that remote sounds pretty decent as it looks more like an A/V remote than a computer remote.
