Was think over the weekend for a feature that you could be able to incorporate easily on your application that gives the user the ability to send the box to whichever status they wanted based on when it's happening the next recording.
Something like another tray configuration panel with a dropdown with the allowed system states and a numeric updown control to determine the hour difference to the next recording and if greater than this number send the PC to the state selected.
All this so, because normally the machine wakes up to start a recording and states powered.
Let me know what you think...

While I won't be building this into the tray utility, you could probably achieve this using a DOS script and GBPVRcli and the DOS shutdown command.
