http://blog.netflix.com/2008/10/opt-in-f...layer.html

I was just wondering if this will break the netflix plugin for me? I work 98% of the time on the mac - so it would be nice for me to be able to switch - but I don't want to lose the functionality on GBPVR. It looks like eventually they are planning on moving the whole plugin to silverlight rather than WMP.

Also - any incompatibilities with GBPVR 1.3.7?

I was reading threads about the plugin last night, and I know I saw whurlston mention that opt-ing in to the silverlight beta would most likely break the plugin.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the plugin wouldn't work with the silverlight player.

So I joined the Silverlight beta - its a big plus for me as a Mac user - and sure enough it seems to have broken the plugin. However, movies I downloaded prior to switching still play fine - it just seems to be the download process that is broken.

When you click on a film to download the pop up screen starts to go away and then it just hangs. I have to end the GBVPR task to get it to stop.

Any ideas for a workaround? I'll be happy to be your test guinea pig.

I will have to join the Silverlight beta in order to see if the plugin can be modified to use it. The issue is that once I do, there is no going back so I have been avoiding doing that. But since I haven't really done much development on the current plugin lately anyway, I will be joining the beta in the next couple of days. I'll keep everyone posted.

It doesn't look like support for the Silverlight player is going to be very easy. The Silverlight player streams the video and audio streams separately it seems. The best I may be able to do is open window with the Silverlight player embedded in it. I'm pretty sure that downloading the movie will not be possible. I'll continue to look into it but that's my first impressions. I will also see what the Nov. 16 XBox update does.

Hi Whulrston,

Suggestion regarding silverlight while keeping WMP availability...maybe you can have one of your fans send you their login information for netflix who already has silverlight [ you cant order DVDs from their account because the address is wrong, hey we trust you Smile ] then you can test both versions. Login to netflix with their account, start a movie playback then test silverlight features...login to netflix with your account, test with WMP features.

If there is a conflict (ie hard to go back and forth) simply install a free copy of vmware desktop on your system, install a windows XP into a virtual machine and run one of your versions there...don't let vmware scare you its really easy to setup and run, and there is an automatic shared folder between all virtual machines so you can put your compiled object files there.
