Down south in the states, the attic is above 120 degrees for about 7 months of the year. I'd love to be able to move stuff there as I have lots of room but it's a death trap.

Mine never gets anywhere near that, but at the height of summer, on a good day, you couldn't sit up there for more than about 15 minutes. Strangely, I can't recall ever having a hardware problem caused by the temperature (it can get pretty cold in the winter too) - or maybe that's a bad thing to say...

The sounds of a dieing hard drive, gasping for life, forcing it's platters to spin in a vain attempt to be recognized as useful... to no avail.

I've also been here

I'd be tempted to hit the hard disk on the top as hard as possible... this sometimes, releases the heads from the parked position which also sound like Clu-Click... Clu-Click... Clu-Click... whiiiiiiir.... Clunk ....

I've used this trick a couple of times to get hard disks to spin and read of the data. IMHO it's worth it aka nothing ventered nothing gained when your HD is dead like this....

I have a 1Tb new from NewEgg (Western Digital) waiting at home. I'm going to install it tomorrow night, and then I'll use the 500Gb as a USB drive to try and get data off.

I would like to retain the file structure.

The nice thing is, I set GBPVR to use \\server\Video as the recording etc. drive. So, I had 40Gb on the server's main drive I could use temporarily as my Video share.

Plus having things backed up... phew... Gotta keep the WAF up.
