My cable provider just remapped my QAM channels again. While I was rescanning, I started thinking that there must be a better way to keep up with this. The way I do it now is first go to the silicone dust forum and find out where they think the current channels are. Then I go to a QAM ready TV and input that channel number. Most of the time, the channels are correct. Once I know the channel numbers, I edit the QAM list in the atsc folder so it will only scan the channels I want. I then rescan in config and then map to the stations to the new channels.

The fact that I can just enter the channel number into a QAM ready TV makes me think that most QAM must use the same basic tuning information like: T:116,0,0~P:1~V:64~A:65~PMT:71~PCR:64~N:>116.1 * (000(AC3))
for channel 116-1. If so, then it would be great to create a master list that we could use as a scan-x file. Then all that you would have to do was go to silicone dust, find your channel numbers, then map them to the correct location without having to rescan. Does that make sense? Would it work?

Well I guess I will ask it in a more simple way. Would all QAM channels use the same tuning information for a certain channel?

My channel 116-1 uses: T:116,0,0~P:1~V:64~A:65~PMT:71~PCR:64~N:>116.1 Would this correctly tune channel 116-1 for everyone else if it was a clear QAM channel on their cable system?

It would be nice if you could get that info down and make it easier but I have a feeling you're spinning your wheels. As I'm coming to understand more and more I don't think QAM is going to be viable much longer as cable companies are doing their best to encrypt everything, except the very basic local channels that they are still required to keep clear, at least for now.

The only good thing about all this is, it comes at a time when there isn't much worth watching on the tube anyway.

It'd only be the same for other users of the same cable company in the same area. You might get some cable companies that use the same parameters in all areas, but thats not always the case. They're definitely not the same as the parameters used for other cable companies.
