MPC-HC does use DirectShow but all the MPC filters are compiled into the executable. In the setup, you can select the use of internal or external filters. If you want to use MPC's filters in another application, you need to install the standalone pack.

The similarity with VLC was only in reference to the fact that the decoders were compiled into the executable.

Does MPC-HC use the internal filters by default, or do you have to specifically tell it to use them? Basically, I'm wondering if my testing procedure of playing a file in MPC-HC and expecting to get the same playback as in GBPVR is valid.

Could I deselect all internal, but still install the standalone pack and then expect the same performance in both?

I think it uses internal by default. It's been a really long time since I actually used the UI.

Yup. Then it should be exactly the same. It should actually be the same regardless of internal or external settings. They are still DirectShow decoders, just loaded from a resource instead of from a file. The only issue would then be to make sure that you are using the same build version of the UI as you are using of the filters in GBPVR.
