WMP can play these files but npvr doesn't... using: microsoft dtv-dvd video decoder for h264 and mpeg2... this works for avis and mpgs no problem... renderer: evr

WMP is similar to VLC in that it has it's own source filters, splitters and possibly decoders. Whether or not it can play something has no relationship on whether a 3rd party app can play it using DirectShow. If you're on Windows 7, I think all you need is a splitter (at least that's all I recall needing to play the .mp4 files produced by Nero Recode), and one is available in the MPC-HC filter package. There are many decoder filters in that package too. Another option will be ffdshow-tryouts, though I'm not sure it will provide the needed splitter.

In any case, you need to make sure Windows itself can play a given file, without relying on WMP, before NVPR will be able to play it. You can test this by opening the media file using GraphEdit and see if it can build a graph and play the file. Essentially that duplicates what NPVR will do to play the file.

Yeah, it'll come down to Window's ability to find a combination of directshow filters to play this file type. The best way to test this is download and run GraphEdit, and click the 'Render Media File' menu option, then select your file. It'll show you the graph it builds, or complain if it cant find files.

The NPVR decoder settings only apply to .ts and .mpg files. All other file types just rely on the Window's to choose the decoders.

Thanks Johnson... I'll look for that. I downloaded the SAF 5 and that seemed to help. The problem though is that it messed up WMP. So I'll see whether the MPC-HC packages will help.

(I realize that this answer was answered, but searching for m4v in the search doesn't work)
