I'll soon move the wiki site to gbpvr.com.

When doing this I will try to restructure things, move skins to it's own group, trying to shorten the left menu bar etc

Anyone having suggestions about structural improvements?

(The move itself will hopefully just mean that you'll not be able to upload stuff for a day.)

wiki is really useful, and all it really needs is

a) just some streamlining. Not a huge re-do, but just a little tightening up. I can't quit put into words, but I think you know what I mean.

b) I don't know if it's possible, but some way to organzie the utils/plugins better. There must be a whay to do, but it's probably a nightmare. What it could use is just consistency. Something like:

Name
Date
Version
Works w/ (and the version of that it is confirmed to work w/)
Requires (and version)
Detail
Install Instr

Again, ####, but the best part about GB right now is also the worst: the plugins. To a one they are all varying lvls of great, but some have a learning curve and others some program-halting conflicts. It's just the nature of some pretty rapid devlopment amoung a number of people, all working together on different projects.

What I'm suggesting wouldn't solve those issues, but if there was set structure for posting them, I think part of those issues would be solved.

Bladder, how much programming control do we have with the Wiki? Since we are working on the Plugin/Skin Auto Update schema, and much of the information capone suggested is described in that file, is there a way that this can be stored in a meta database in the wiki?

I think we need at least the following for the Plugin/Skin Section:

1. A reorganized Plugin section based on type of plugin. some suggestions: Video, Music, Recordings, System, TV, and Other.

2. A section for the External Utility apps. Stuff like RenameRecording, AddReOccuring, CDK Scheduler, RecTracker, etc.

3. A Template for adding new plugins to the system. Right now there is no template and it's pretty much up to the updater to make sure everything is correct.

All plugins should have a link to a thread in a support Forum. I would also suggest that a Plugin Support forum and a seperate SKIN support forum be created on GBPVR along with the current Developer support forum. Community announcements to me should just be used to announce the availablility of the skin/plugin, support should be done in a seperate forum. Once this is complete, the Wiki can have a link back to the appropriate forum. Right now I have to check about 3 or 4 different areas for support of plugins, where I could just check one forum.

That's about all I can think of right now.

Think of the wiki as just pages you can write.
That beeing said you can have cross-linking, inclusion of other pages, indexing and so on, but no real background processing.

I've just come back from my trip, so I'll take a look at the schema you uploaded to the wiki.

please give me a heads up when you switch all of the plugins and skins to gbpvr. I've included links to alot of the skins and plugins on a central HTPC news site that I'm setting up. I'll have to go through and change all of the links to point them to the new site.

Thanks.

Bladder, here is something that might be of use for the Wiki:

http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/WikiForms

If nothing else, it can be used to provide a standard template for making additions or changes to the Plugin and Skin pages. This way they follow a consistent look and feel.

It looks like the Wiki is written in PHP, if so, it might be possible to use the WikiForms to also create the appropriate XML file for plugin downloading. There are a couple of other potentially useful scripts at this site as well (spell checker, multilanguage support, etc). These are all in the Cookbook section:

Yes, KA, my original thought was just providing templates like in the cookbook, but maybee we must have something more advanced...

We'll post in the forum in good time before the switch is made (and I plan to leave a redirect lingering...)
