Hi Sub/Martin or anyone able/interested'

Have you seen over at the Plex Forums some guys that have hijacked the Apple Trailers App on an aTV3 (no jailbreaking required, obviously) that allows the aTV3 to connect to a Plex server? It's really quite amazing...They're using a web host and DNS forwarding with a few simple Python scripts...it really works well...

Would it be possible to do something similar to connect to NEWA?

Pretty please? Would be great to have a non-jailbroken Apple TV (2/3) work with Plex Server and connect to NextPVR...that would be the ultimate solution...

Check out this project...a standard out of the box aTV2/3 (no jailbreaking) whereby one points the DNS on the aTV at the server/scripts....really very cool....would be fantastic to adopt the same approach using NEWA:

I know it's a personal thing, but from my perspective I don't see any obvious advantage to Plex vs XBMC as alternate clients to NextPVR's other than it being a transcoding solution for older h/w. If the Plex client for Samsung had included music and was open source I would have more open.

As for the ATV 1 and 2 are inferior players for NextPVR and 3 is just average. They may be great for Apple's vision of what an extender should be and a lot of people have bought into it, I'm just not one of them.

If someone gets a form of server going, I'll be glad to help with the pyhon integration.

Hi Martin....did you have a look at the URL I posted?

The aTV3 is more than capable of playing 1080i TV broadcast signals, therefore good enough....

The way these guys have their script(s) running is this:

1. Install their python scripts on a PC that's always on on a network (such as the NextPVR/PMS)...the scripts are basically a mini web server and DNS server
2. Adjust a Settings.py script for ones own network settings (often not needed as it used GDM for Plex discovery)
3. On the aTV(s) change the DNS to ones server that the scripts are on (the NextPVR/PMS)
4. On the aTV click on the "Trailers" app and all of a sudden one is in front of a Plex Library....all metadata, resume etc. working

Bloody fantastic...now if we could do the same to the NEWA server whereby we translate what is coming out of NEWA to XML files the aTV understands (so can be rendered in a readable way like X-NEWA) we'd have a brilliant solution...

Just my thoughts...

I assume you mean 1080i MPeg2 based content? Rather than 1080i h.264?

Since we'd be using the power of NEWA it can transcode the TS files on the fly...in other words copying the exact same way the guys are doing it out of the PMS...

Here's a video http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xzs29u_...videogames, except for the hack itself it is quite uninspiring as a player from my perspective ie a non-atv user.

It's a little more advanced now, can use grid view etc., soon they'll have myPlex working...considering these are stock standard non-jailbroken aTV2/3's and one only needs to run a small (and often with little to no modification) a Python Script(s) it really is ingenious...all audio channels working without fault where are Plex Client(s) are having auto out-of-sync issues this little hi-jack is working perfectly...resume not only on the one device but through all of ones devices is a nice boon...and of course because the server back end is Plex (PMS) all of ones metadata (fan art etc.) is automatically present...the watched, partial watched and unwatched flags.

At the end of the day all they're doing is waiting for an aTV to fetch the trailers.apple.com URL and then redirecting it to a mini-HTTP server that works as the middle man grabbing the files out of the Plex Web Server and changing it in to XML files that aTV understands.

Makes me think it would be perfect for NEWA...aTV-NEWA :-) Pretty please Martin...take a stab at it ;-)
