If you decide to install SAF6, be sure to pm hoborg for the "unlocked" version. H.264 isn't used much on this side of the pond, so you might as well set H.264 to Disabled. (True, if you had a Colossus or HDPVR that did hardware H.264 encoding, the LAV Video Decoder would not be suitable.) I have no experience with ffdshow but some people are using it, including your countryman mvallevand. The MainConcept decoder you're now using is reportedly pretty good, and it's the only choice if you want closed captions.

Not ffdshow - ffmpeg. LAV is built around libavformat and libavcodec, which are the core components of the ffmpeg project.

ffdshow is also built around libavformat and libavcodec, so you can think of them as two branches on a tree.

Yes, i am. LAV is further developement of XBMC DSPlayer, not FFDShow.
As sub wrote, both using the same core, but that is all.
LAV is replacement for FFDshow for many users, but in my opinion, LAV still missing some important features. That is reason why my SAF using combination of both.

I am pretty sure the QuickSync work in LAV started with the Intel developers work in ffdshow.
