seems like that would have a rather narrow application... most shows air new episodes on only one channel, with repeats airing both on the same and on other channels. The existing "All Episodes, All Channels" option would seem to cover the need for almost everyone.

I agree that the application is narrow, but here are my justifications:
1. My NBC HD went out but my NBC SD was working, because this is not an option I missed a bunch of shows and had to reprogram all my recurring favories (my NBC HD still does not work).
2. Shows move from between affiliate channels, like Fox sports 1 to Fox sports 2 (The Barrett-Jackson auction does this 4 times a year, some UFC shows do this also).
3. On the rare occasion a show is sold to another network.
For my 2 cents reason #1 is reason enough, maybe you can just make that the default behavior find any new show on any channel and prefer HD over SD (or make it an option for the end user to order the resolution they prefer). The redundancy has value to me.

Actually here in Canada on cable the same US network shows are on US and Canadian channels and on two zones making 4 choices. The Canadian and US shows are typically simulcast, but that doesn't mean the whole evening is scheduled in parallel. On top of this I don't merge my HDPVR and ATSC tuners so I actually end up with 5 more channel choices.
I like the idea of this as a feature but to work it would need to have smarts on the padding to pick the channel with best padding.
