Hey Everyone and Sub in Particular

Did anyone get a glimpse of the New Apple TV? There is this tvOS https://developer.apple.com/tvos/ which I would like to either write or collaborate on a front end app for it. I would like it to be my Christmas preset for the wife and finally rid my living room of a PC.

If anyone could guide me as to where to begin I would be truly thankful.

I watched their new product launches this morning. Quite a bit of new stuff this year.

The Kodi NextPVR addon source good examples of how to get most things, like getting channel / recording lists, scheduling recordings, cancelling recordings etc. There is similar functionality available via NEWA API.

The one thing not natively available is transcoding live stream to H.264/AAC for consumption on these mobile/tablet devices, but I'm thinking about revisiting that for the next release, so it's possible all the bits might be in place for it to be possible in the near future.

I guess they'll be no update for the current Apple TV boxes but it does look nice.

Will you also support hls streaming that the sdk requires?

Yep, if I do implement transcoded live stream, I'll include HLS and maybe DASH.

I would happily fund a kickstarter for NextPVR on AppleTV, Roku, Chromecast. Imagine how easy your job would be if you only had to support a couple of hardware platforms. None of those are hobbyist/fringe hardware platforms... Tried Kodi and hated it. Used to have a SageTV box. Loved it. WAF very high.

Personally, wouldn't care if live tv was not supported. Never watch it.

So far I am planning out the screens, the js code and TVML plus the server needed to get the whole thing going. There is only temporary storage on the device of 200 MB and it is highly recommended not to use it all.

Kickstarter sounds cool, but the goal it actually to eventually charge about $5 for the app. 30% goes to Apple. I am going to keep 20% for server costs and 50% will go to sub for NPVR. I have a full time job in marketing but I have truly wanted to build an app for years more than a hello world test. Anyone who would like to help, I am more than happy to split code with them.

Nice to see someone who knows what they're doing working on this! I've spent the last month or so (I OTOH have no idea what I'm doing Smile ) building a mostly broken app to manage recordings, so it'd be great full featured app that actually works. It appears that MobileVLCKit allows for Mpeg 2 playback on the device - judging by the "Channels" app for the HDHomerun - so that might be an option, although that may only work in UIKit apps.
