When recording shows, single recordings ere normally not a problem (although sometimes, NextPVR refuses to record two shows at the same time: it's OK at the moment)

Multiple recordings are more of a problem. Generally, to 'fix' a multiple recording, I have to watch a current show for a minute (I can't believe anyone designed software like this)

Currently, however, Next PVR says 'Unable to communicate with a recording service', so I can't watch anything, and can't record multiple shows.

Is there an easy (designed) method of recording (and saving) multiple recordings so the square goes red and it remembers?

I am assuming that you are in Aldridge in England and that you are using a tuner device that contains a single tuner and receives Freeview from an aerial and is attached via USB.

Digital TV in the UK is broadcast on about eight frequencies with multiple channels on a single frequency. NextPVR is able to record all of the channels on a single frequency using a single tuner. Therefore, you might be able to simultaneosuly record shows on BBC1 and BBC2 but not simultaneoulsy record shows on BBC1 and ITV2.

I am not sure what you mean by "multiple recordings". You can record the shows called "xxyyz" on channel "Blah" at a 21.00 every days or at 21.00 every Monday ... Select a show in the EPG and then select Record and then set the Recording Type ...

Unable to communicate with a recording service typically means that the recording service is not running or you have a firewall blocking the client (nextpvr) access to the backend server recording service.
If you can reproduce the problem and upload the logs (check sticky at top of support forum for details), someone can take a look.
It would be helpful to clarify if Graham's assumptions are correct regarding location and exact tuner. As he said, if you have a single Freeview (Freeserve??) tuner, then it can record multiple shows at the same time if they are on the same mux (which most people think is pretty cool) but not if they are on different muxes as a single tuner can only tuner into one mux at a time.
So if you want to gurantee to be able to record AND watch live TV on any channel simultaneously, you need multiple tuners. This will be true of any other software, whatever you think of it's design.
