Force retune between two back-to-back shows on same channel?

It happens that I occasionally want to record two multi-hour shows that run back-to-back on the same channel. I know from experience that in that long a period with no user input, my cable box is going to put up an "Are you still there? Press a button" overlay sometime during the second show and that recording will be ruined. What can I do?

I've tried putting a -1 minute post-pad on the first recording and then adding a 1-minute manual recording on some other channel between the two. NextPVR won't allow it, as it apparently thinks the first show is still recording and wants to cancel it.

I suppose I could turn the entire first recording into a manual recording, so NextPVR won't do that, but creating two manual recordings as a workaround is getting pretty inconvenient. Any other ideas on how I can force a retune between the two shows? Thanks.

What is the timeout on your STB? I had a related problem when my STB would shutoff in the middle of the night and I'd lose the first recording the next day. I solved this by moving my EPG update after the shutdown and by sending a remote key as part of the EPG update process.

I wrote some code that I added to the script that gets executed at the end of each recording. The script checks if another show is recording on the same channel and if one is, it blasts the "Exit" button. That doesn't affect the display, but does reset the timer on the cable box. I'm going to guesstimate the timeout is somewhere in the 3 to 3.5 hour range. Never specifically measured it, but it happens before the end of the second of two two-hour back-to-back shows. My box doesn't really shut off, as soon as NextPVR tunes to another channel the STB responds and takes down the overlay.

I like the idea of a post-recording script. I'll check into it. Thanks!
