Is it in some way possible to configure how much the transcoder buffers before starting the stream?

Yes, but it depends on the ffmpeg call and the specific situation that you are talking about.

<AnalyzeDuration>default</AnalyzeDuration>

Change default to the value you want to have with the -analzye-duration parameter.

This will not really speed up slow transcoding to Kodi, it mainly would be used to make it longer.

Looking at when you start the stream in a browser there is about 10 seconds when it's just receiving data (which is most probably the same I'm seeing starting a channel in Kodi), I'll be the first to admin that I'm not familiar with ffmpegs inner workings but is it possible to shorten that time anything?

If you can use h/w encoding it will be faster. To be clear though you shouldn't have to transcode video for Kodi and if you do probably post on the Kodi forum to see if they can help yuou. The Chromecast doesn't get a lot of feedback.

To see if you have a Kodi problem on your Chromecast you can install uidroid to see how it plays your streams quicker.
