If I'm installing from scratch on an empty PC, is there a recommended distribution of Linux to use as the base?

I can see there is a .deb file for ease of installation so I assume one of the Debian based ones is better in that regard, but from there does it make any difference?

For me the decision would be based on what you are doing besides NextPVR and what client you will be using, the browser client has its own limitations and the Kodi clients for Linux will not necessarily give you high quality PVR playback.

Debian can give you a good minimal install if it is only NextPVR but configuring the desktop might be a little harder than others.

Mint always seems to top this list https://distrowatch.com/index.php?distri...l&year=all which is a really good place to compare most distros.

The deb installer certainly is best if you don't know Linux but I wouldn't discount LibreELEC or CoreELEC if you want to use a dedicated box and especially want to use Kodi on the OS. Basically on LE, NextPVR can be with the remote via Kodi and updates are automatic (if you want). Kodi is also optimized on generic distros it isn't.

Some people like Docker too and that can be installed easily. It is Debian based. I find Docker takes a bit more configuration then the deb installer or LE and of course there is not client.
