I use mencoder to cut out unwanted parts and compress the mpeg to Xvid. Typically I'll get about 350 megs per hour and the quality is very close to the original. It's automated too. GBPVR plays them back very well.

Stattik,

I'm still fooling around with mencoder and haven't found the perfect set of options yet...do you mind posting your mencoder options?

I'm in the midst of creating a script to automate encoding with the option of allowing profiles for each program which includes a/v bitrate, resolution and even choice of command line encoders. So far my options produces blocks when I see explosions. I use a bit rate of 1000 in divx with a resoltion of 512:288 from an mpg file at high quality (GBPVR settings). This produces about 600 MB an hour.

Thanks,
Jam.z

Auto GK looks pretty good. One step, seems to keep audio in sync and you can queue a number of jobs as a batch translation.
