Probably true. I'd like it if D-link would just fix the few remaining glitches in the DSM-320. I've been eagerly awaiting the next generation of UPnP media devices, but they really haven't arrived yet.

... you're wrong !

Check the link I previously published:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/S...&CatId=197

... it's about *only* $115 CDN ! That means about $100 US.
And it's not OEM.

It's even cheaper on TigerDirect US website:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...&CatId=197

... only $89 US.

PS: Interested for links about the MVP at $50 US.

Bye!

(Yes, maybe the 150 Mhz ARM processor is not enough ...)

Several places had the old MVP on clearance for around $40. That is how I ended up with one. I dropped in a local Radio Shack and asked. It was $39.99 and I couldn't resist.

The old MVP units are nearly impossible to find now. I haven't bothered to get a quote on the new units.

I have liked the idea of the UPnP technology, but that is really my personal bias. It's likely to change if these manufacturers don't get their act together. I like networks and the idea that the TV could talk across the LAN to the stereo system and a server with all my digital photos, etc. Shoot, I have a VPN connection to my mother's house that I use to pull up her photo collection on my TV.

Most of these units have a dedicated chip for the video stuff that works in conjunction with the processor. They do support all the codecs "natively", for the most part. They can do some software updates, but can't really support media types that can't be processed easily through the chip or using the available processor power.

Here in Canada, I think we still have the old at the full price.

I've not found any retailer that sell reduced MVP (either OEM or old versions).

I am sure others can answer this better than I can. I know the new units have wireless capability, whereas the old ones were LAN only. The old ones do composite and S-video output, but I think the new ones have another video option with better output, possibly even HD. I am sure there are some internal updates as well.

I didn't mean to imply the decoding of video is offloaded to the PC. I suppose I may have misused the term "transcoding".

from tiger direct
Quote:Network Interface
10/100 base T Ethernet Jack (RJ45)
PCMCIA Card slot for 802.11b

I don't want that.
Plus it look like I still have to buy a wifi-card for it.
It's gotta be an older model.

The new model comes with 802.11g.
That costs quite a bit more.

the same price as the Hauppauge MVP. It also includes a wireless
interface.

The ADS box seems a lot better than the MVP, as it supports
component video and DVI.

It also supports an extensive list of codecs:
MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, MOV, Compressed AVI,
MPEG Audio layer 1 & 2, MP3, OGG, AC3, WMA,
JPEG, BMP, GIF, animated GIF, PNG.

See:

... will GBPVR eventually support this product ?

Thanks!

Bye!
I usually am not one to disparage, having once been a H/W and S/W salesman, but I will wait and see on this one. I have 3 ADSTech products in my home, only one of which ever worked well. I think these guys just logo OEM products for resale. Customer and technical support sucks - they don't know their products and don't follow up.

Most recently I bought the ADSTech NAS server. What a piece of junk! And they have not flollowed up with me after multiple conversations with support. They know that it does not work as advertised, but have not yet fixed it.

I won't take a chance on ADSTech again. (If anybody from ADS sees this - I welcome the opportunity to be proved wrong ...)
