Did you choose constant or variable bitrate? Take a look at this...http://www.zune.net/en-us/support/howto/...m#section6
Dell GX-270 3GHz, 2Gb, HVR1600, Radeon HD 5450, 1Tb, Windows Media Center dedicated NPVR system

this is what u need for the video format so the zune doesnt try to encode it itself
The following codecs and formats can be synchronized and played back on the Zune device.

Audio

Windows Media Audio Standard (.wma) - up to 320 Kbps, CBR and VBR, up to 48-kHz sample rate
MP3 (.mp3) - up to 320 Kbps, CBR and VBR, up to 48-kHz sample rate
AAC (.mp4, .m4a, .m4b, .mov) - up to 320 Kbps, Low Complexity (LC), up to 48-kHz sample rate
Video

Windows Media Video (.wmv) - up to 320x240 and 1.692 Mbps

and this too

Note

The Zune device also supports Windows Media Video (WMV) Simple Profile, Windows Media 7 and 8, and PhotoStory files. For these video types, the maximum video bit rate is 736 Kbps with a maximum overall bit rate of 800 Kbps when audio is included.

So what am I missing on the ffmpeg arguements? Sorry if I'm being dumb, but aren't my parameters in those ranges? Zune is still doing a second conversion on me....

I've not had a chance to try out the MS package mind you, should I be using that instead?

Cheers!

krugar inside the zune software on the left panel right click on advaned options, go to quality and raise that, then u can put higher bitrates on

Just curious if anyone has found any ffmpeg settings that work with a zune so that the zune software does not try to convert the software while loading it onto the device. I have used windows media encoder and it works well. However, I would like to use the single Transcode button in the My Videos section of GBPVR. It is just so much simpler that way than having to launch another app and go through the whole process. Or is there a way to force the Transcode button in GBPVR to pass a command line argument to windows media encoder? I don't want to use the post processing bat file since I do not want to transcode every show I record.

Thanks,
Taz

I don't know if this is going to work or not. I left my data cable at work, so I can't try to transfer an encoded file over without a re-encode by the zune software, and I'm not coming home after work tomorrow and won't be back till Sunday night, so I'll post what I've come up with tonight and see if someone is willing to try it out and let me know. The last thing I think might need some tweaking is the -acodec variable which I left out since I was having problems with it. I'm encoding a file as I type this with the settings below.

So - to add it to the GBPVR options in the transcoding interface, add this to the GBPVR config.xml file in the same section as the rest of the transcoding options (search for ipod or psp)

<Conversion name="Zune" cmd="-y -i {SOURCE_FILE} -vcodec wmv2 -b 672k -s 320x240 -r 25 -aspect 4:3 -ab 48 {DEST_FILE}" targetExtension=".wmv" />

Restart GBPVR and try it out.

Once we get some settings that work, we can see if Sub wants to add it to GBPVR for everyone.

I'll be back to test it out on Monday night and work out any issues thereafter. I'm pretty committed to making this work.

I think I've found the problem. In wmv files that load straight onto the zune, there is specific meta data in the ID tags for each file like the following:

WMFSDKVersion: 10.00.00.3646
WMFSDKNeeded: 0.0.0.0000
IsVBR: No

These tags aren't present in files that meet the zune requirements but still have to be converted in the zune software.

From everything I've read, ffmpeg doesn't support the addition of custom meta data. It does let you add title, copyright, description, and a couple others though.

So the next logical step would be to probably write a simple program that can inject the right ID tags into the file after it's been converted by ffmpeg - the other possibility is a custom build of ffmpeg that will add those tags if it's encoding a wmv file.

Anybody well schooled in coding for ID tag management in media files, or compiling ffmpeg?

Can anybody inject those tags into a zune compliant wmv that won't load onto the zune without conversion to see if my theory holds up - or seen any exception to my theory?
