As you can see from the rest of the thread, the timing settings for the External Recorder capture source can be crucial. Getting audio but no video is often a sign that the transcoding hasn't caught up with the player. The values you use for the "wait" fields, the speed of your CPU and the response time of the site serving the stream can all affect this. The vlc parms just specify the kind of transcoding you want, so the sample ones should work without any changes
In essence: if you can get a stream to play with vlc it should be recordable by External Recorder; if you can get it to work with External Recorder (via UbuStream's channel mode) and can view the stream channel in timeshift mode on your PC, you "should" be able to use your MVP to view it. But, as you can see from this thread, some tweaking may be required to get it to work predictably on some systems.
