My power supply hosed my video card about a month ago. I thought it was ram, or motherboard. Replaced both, slam head on wall, replace Powersupply and back in business.

Now I need to buy a QUIET ONE!!!

I have an Antec Basiq 500 I pulled out of another PC, but it isn't one of their better (ie quiet) ones.

I don't mean to continue to hijack sub's thread, but if you want to know anything about anything quiet, go here. One word of warning however... once you start to quiet your PC, it won't end. Your power supply will be quiet, but then the CPU fan or video card fan or hard drives will be loud and it'll continue in a vicious cycle. The only thing that's really kept me from falling in is lack of funds. As for a quiet power supply, I'd suggest a Seasonic S12.

/back on topic

You might look at an E6600 if the price is decent and you haven't already decided. It has 4MB cache while the E6300/E6400 only have 2MB cache. Intel chips like all the cache they can get for some types of processing, where AMD chips don't seem to care much. I don't know if video encoding/decoding/transcoding gets a boost from more cache on Intel chips or not, though.

I remember when quiet didn't matter. Big Grin

UPDATE: I've had a bit of luck. I spent some time looking at it with the friend. We found than it was AGP port that was destroyed. If you remove any AGP cards and add an old PCI video card, then the machine will manage to boot ok. I'm relieved to know my AMD X2 4600+ CPU is still alive, so I decided to opt for the cheapest fix - buying a replacement motherboard. (ATI X800 AIW is also a goner).

With an AGP card present, the fan spins but nothing else happens.

Unfortunately I've not been able to get the exact same type of motherboard, so I still got a fair bit of work to do to get up and running again. Different sata drivers are making it a pain.

Its been a long day, but hopefully I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...

Just curious: did the crt-monitor really die or was it just the agp-slot afterall.

depending upon how much stuff you got installed & configured, you might give a repair install of windows a shot...

Looks like a good opportunity for you to go to PCIe video.
I have had very good luck with ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards over the years. Gigabyte was recently bought by ASUS.
Both AMD and Intel chips rock for me. Seems like a preference thing.
I agree with many of the posters. A good power supply is critical. Antec or Sparkle are very good brands. Tomshardware.com has a few past reviews.
I have been a slacker for contributions. Let me know if you would like some hardware shipped from the USA.

Just another note, we may be able to find you another motherboard with the same SATA chipset, if not the identical board.
