If you don't mind I'd be curious how the mvpmc dongle handles this, there is a sub-forum here on gbpvr http://forums.gbpvr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=30 and the first sticky explains where to get it, the alpha dongle is best right now.

mvpmc doesn't block PAL on NTSC setting like the Hauppauge dongle, but I think the bottom will get cut off at least it does on my TV. Also on the main menu there is an option setting where you change the PAL/NTSC setting for your tv (it doesn't write anything to flash) so you don't have to reload the dongle, just go into emulation mode. To get back to the setting menu from emulation mode hit Go and then Back.

I'll try to check tonight (GMT+2), the TV area is kids' land until they go to sleep (and if they're not near it, they take most of my time...)

mvallevand, I replaced the dongle, and when powering up, I see the logo (http://www.mvpmc.com in "chalk" in a blue frame), but then I can do nothing - I tried hitting random keys on the remote, but nothing happens. Even the power button doesn't turn off the unit (although it seems the unit turned off after a minute). Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to wait? Should I open another thread for this in the MVPMC forum?

BTW, I have a Wireless MediaMVP that says it's version 2.05 (on the first screen)

Yes it is best to go to the mvpmc forum. You should be using my alpha dongle and you might need to wait a couple of minutes, but it should start up.

Using the mvpmc dongle I get the following:

First, I started the MVP in PAL (that's the way it was set before). Going to emulation mode, I tried to play the 3 videos found on http://www.xmixdrix.com/video/ - The PAL one played fine, the two NTSC files played, but with a lot of blocking artifacts (as if there are a lot of decoding errors).

I then went back to the mvpmc, switched to NTSC, and went back into emulation mode.

Now, in NTSC the GB-PVR UI appears low, so in the media library, if I use the icon view, I don't see the name of files on the 3rd row. I think GB-PVR assumes 480 lines, but if it's used in PAL it draws then lower to vertically center the UI, so now it's too low.

Trying to play the videos, the two in NTSC played well, the one in PAL didn't - I get a black screen with the lower 1/3 of it in green. It might be that internally the video is being sent, since after around 20 seconds (the length of the video), the system returns to the video folder (as if it completed playing the video).

One more thing, when playing NTSC video in NTSC and PAL videos in PAL, I get block errors on the first second or two of the video, and then everything is fine. These are the same blocking errors that appear throughout the video when I played NTSC in PAL mode, and I didn't get them with the original dongle.

I guess this thread got turned around.

For my own piece of mind, I'm wondering...

If you are NTSC, MVP in NTSC mode, NTSC TV, do PAL AVIs transcode properly at 25 fps?

If you are PAL, MVP in PAL mode, PAL TV, do NTSC AVIs transcode properly in 23.97 or 29.97 fps?

For myself, in NTSC, I can see PAL videos just peachy because the vids stay in 25 fps, ZProcess maintains the aspect ratio, and the MVP seems to not mind 25 fps, even though it is in NTSC mode, on a NTSC TV...

I was just wondering about PAL land, expecting the user to NOT change MVP modes or TV sync rates...

As said, if you upload a small NTSC clip I'll try and see what it does without changing any settings (all PAL devices and settings over here)

I tried this a few days ago, they all (23,97 , 29.97)play fine on my mvp, but as Martin explained: that's probably due to the fact that my tv automagically switches to ntsc mode when required. So I guess the mvp outputs them just as they are.

I have several files I'd like to upload. They total around 300Mb. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might store them?

I suppose I could have them on my own computer as a ftp server, but my upload is limited to 512kb, and that's painfully slow...
