Wiki:
In political geography and international politics a country is a geographical entity, a territory, most commonly associated with the notions of state or nation.

A nation is a 'set of people with a common identity who have formed a nation-state or usually aspire to do so'

Well the definition of a nation does not (currently) apply to NI!
So..... if the UK isn;t a country, what country do the people of NI live in?

Why are people from the United States called Americans?
Because USA is the more common subject of America, especially English speaking nations. Also since the name of USA doesn't allow an easy way to use it's name for it's citizens. England has English, Canada Canadians, Mexico Mexicans, etc. USAns doesn't work. Of course this does somewhat perturb us that live or have origens in other American countries.

Blah, semantics. We've all got better things to do, no?

People from North America, Central America, South America, they're all "Americans" literally, but the convention seems only to apply to United States of Americans.

Just call us Yanks huh? Well yank on this. LOL
