I'll bet the wiki isn't setup for it all the way yet.

Should have mentioned, it's not on the front page but when you get into the site....

-Oz- Wrote:The issue i have is look at all the questions in the forums. We have a huge wealth of knowledge. How to cut out commercials, how to transcode the video files, etc. But every noob has to ask or really search (I spent days searching the forums to come up with a solution I liked).

That's what we need from you now Oz. I lost my newbie glaze after a couple of months and started to know where everyting is. We need people to see a question that is being asked often and someone to write or at least be proactive and suggest a page.

I keep writing pages that answer questions, and then refer the forum over to the page, rather than just answer on the forum...

I think that the cards section and a GB-PVR for Dummies section (also know as Oil Executive summaries Smile ) need to be written...

Actually the answers are mostly in the wiki. People are not aski9ng the questions corrctly, because they don't know the basics.

I'm working on an all in one, one stop HDTV primer, that will be so basic, it will make Granny have a better PVR than you...

We'll see how that goes...

BTW. You're gonna love 1.0

Yeah. Blader said it won't be available until the new version is released and our wiki is upgraded

I hate you.

Yea, I was going to start an FAQ section. I shall start keeping tabs on what gets asked a lot.

An HDTV primer eh. Thats good, I'm waiting for 1.0 to maybe pick up an HVR-1600 to see if i like unencrypted QAM. if it works well I'm gonna get an HD-homerun for myself and send the 1600 up for my parents.

And oh yea, I know exactly where everything I need is but I forsee a lot of people who just get frustrated and give up (not like mythtv, that is a pain). Or people who aren't using it to the full potential.

Perhaps FAQ question 1 should be:
Q: Why can't I install this.
A: Check to make sure .net 2.0 is installed as well as windows media player

Q: Why can't I see video
A: Make sure you have an appropriate video decoder installed (see the following page...)

There are two types of veterans who answer questions in the forum. Those who know a lot, and those who write a lot. I'm an example that proves they are not necessarily connected... Big Grin

The thing that us writers need to do is setup a format for these FAQs so that it makes sense not just to a Newbie, but to a writer and even a knower (who hates writing) That way it would be easier to add more information...

I think we should use the TOC lists that I have been using. It's so easy.

Also, don't know what the consensus is for Main GB-PVR FAQ, but I like my FAQ technique I used in ZProcess. The solutions to the questions are actually separate HTML files. Users would click for the solution, and we'd see how many hits. We could even move the bigger hits to the top of the FAQ...

Have a look at the Troublshooting section of my ZProcess (all lurkers too) and weigh in...

Aah, spotted it, I'll check if there's an update in the skin (I'm probably not going to update it before the new PMWiki, but I'll look out for it).

You could try it out with some layout tinkering (see below). The rules for the keywords are: Start with a capital letter on a single word with a colon ':' following it (see below for example).

We should also agree on what's supposed to go in there. My 2 cents (just taken from PmWiki ;-):

Code:
(:div6 style="background-color:lightgray;":)
[@
Summary: <One sentence line that summaries the plugin. This text can show up in pagelists>
Prerequisites: <[[!GBPVR_v99_12]] other plugins and/or utilites it depends upon
Status: <Beta,Stable,Unsupported,Broken>
Maintainer: <[[~username]]>
Categories:<[[!Replacement]] etc>
@]
(:div6end:)

NOTE! The above have some header code to see what it would look like when added into a plugin page. These first and last two lines will later change!

Cheers

blader_se

PS. Looking at the sassari page, it is possible to do redirects in PmWiki with
Code:
(:redirect Utility/ComSkip:)

thanks, I think it should be the same stuff from PMwiki, but we could also add download links, to make it easier for users
