Your script must work well within a suitable environment, but it doesn't like my standard hungarian windows.

See the attached screenshots.
The second one shows the 3rd tab page on the regional and language options control panel item, directing every non-unicode software to behave as hungarian. I think this might be causing the problems.

i've activated your CP & tried again. it's still working, so there must be another reason, can't figure why. i would guess that i does not really matter if it's a german or ungarian windows, we both have non standard characters in our CP. can you test that on another machine with hungarian settings? seems like it's impossible to read a txt with another explicit CP from vbs, don't know about other scripting languages.

One last bit:

if I change the encoding of the file to Western with a text editor, then the VBS script will give the same result as yours.
