sorry. indeed i am in the us. there are some channels broadcast locally in hd, and as you may know soon all channels will go to "digital". that question is unrelated to the fta satellite system i am planning, which i think is still dvb?

i assume then that if i capture an atsc broadcast, i will either need a card that saves to an .mpg (if such exists) or i will have to transcode (assuming that is possible)?

Yeah, there is some free to air DVB channels over the US. These will be standard definition and have an MPEG1 Layer2 audio track, so will easily playable on your MVP. You can use the Cyberlink or ATI mux to record directly to a .mpg file.

You then went on to introduce high definition ATSC digital channels to the conversation, which is an entirely different beast, will be captured by a different type of device. The type of file create by ATSC device still just depends on the mux you choose. These digital recordings will often be high definition and most likely have an AC3 audio track. These will not be natively viewable on an MVP. You could configure a post processing process to downscale these to standard definition if needed, but you might need to play around with it a bit to see how smooth you can get the process.
