I use just MVP's, and an AMD X2 3600+ with stock cooler (in a very good quiet case - Antec Fusion) and it sits in my living room, 5 ft from the sofa, and is the sound is imperceptible, when the place is empty and silent. It exceeded my expectations, and runs at most at 35 degs C even when transcoding two Avi's on the fly.
With Avi's i find it encodes on the fly 5 minutes for every minute watched (Avi's are usually 350MB for an hour long show), and can transcode two different avi's to the two MVP's with ease with the same results as above.
The case was £100, but the hardware inside cost me about £200 for Chip, mobo and 2GB DDR2 memory, and the UK isnt the cheapest place for hardware compared to Hong Kong or the US.
If you go for a Core Duo im sure you will get even better performance for a premium.

Having said that im watching this these PCH 100 threads avidly... it looks like a whole new set of options should open up when it becomes available to buy here and sub and mvallevand work their magic...!
GBPVR: A64 X2 6000+, ASUS M2A-VM HDMI, 4GB ram, 8800GT GFX, 2x Nova-T DVB-T, 1x D-Box2 Cable reciever, 2x Wired MVP's, 1.0.16. Vista.
Plugins: MusicLibrary2, Weather, Int Cinema Listings, Burn DVDX2, D-Box2 Plugin, DVD Ripper.

jksmurf, I think this question is important but I think it hidden away here. If Morticia can get 1000+ views in the General Discussion sub-forum I think this questions deserves that much too.

Thanks stu!

Martin,

I did think about that, but I wasn't sure if it would be recognized as the PCH is quite new. Will start a new thread, maybe after I come back from leave.

The issue isn't the PCH, it is just a player. I think you are trying to figure out how to manage HD content on the GBPVR server now that your client issues are reduced.

sub, no need for this change, I figured out how to do uyvy with DirectFB. I think NMT users will be impressed with the speeds of this new demo.

This runs about 7 screens a second.

Nice. What res were the photos? Presumably these are over wired ethernet? I have a laptop running a slideshow wireless off the NSLU2 Slug (which is on a wireless router) but it doesn't do well with large pics.
