Yep, just send him a Private Message request, he may take a few days to respond, then you will get password and login info.

I totally know how you feel. That's how I felt a couple of years ago.

At that time, I decided to be proactive, and whenever I had learned something new, I edited the wiki page or created a new one. I did a bunch of stuff then, and still take stabs at it, but I have lost that 'newbie glaze' (you know, the glossy eyed, deer in the headlight, 'now what do I do?', look) so I can find what I want, it reads well enough for me, haven't seen the need...

Indeed we need more people that are documenting and re-teaching what they are learning while they are learning...

I'd be happy to edit or proof read... I'm just tired of writing whole pages...

Hi zehd,

would have quoted your whole reply but didn't seem I needed to as I wholeheartedly get you!

I haven't got the newbie glaze as you so eloquently put it as now a reasonably seasoned PVRX2 user.

I am still learning and you are right this should be documented in some form as the lessons are learned!

Should I get access to the wiki I would love to take up your offer to edit/proof pages etc.

I suppose not being a huge techie I have found in the past that I cannot answer many questions on the Forums but would like to put something back into PVRX2 apart from a donation.

I read with interest tonight from this thread

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=38415

Sub's comment:

Quote:GB-PVR isnt well suited to non-technical users

I just have a belief that this software is suited and it is the Wiki that is putting alot of people off.......

Anyway could just be me....... :p

Cheers

Steeb

I have been thinking for a long time that I could write an up-to-date version of the quickstart guide. This thread might be the motivation to get me off the sofa and typing something.

The image in my mind is a step by step guide listing the minimum necessary to get a working GBPVR. For example, in the beginning a newbie should leave the defaults wherever possible, we should describe the steps (or include a link) to get XMLTV data from one simple/reliable source for each country, a newbie should start with DVR-MS recording because it works, we should describe the steps to get a single tuner on one card working as a first step, each page in the guide should be really brief and should not appear complicated or intimidating.

We should include troubleshooters for all the common problems that we see in this forum incluing, for example, under-powered graphics cards and dodgy decoders.

The un-typed version that is in my head is probably about twenty or thirty very brief pages.

Will I have comitted myself to do something when I hit the Submit Reply button?

Only if your conscience will keep you up at night......

Either that, or join me at the "Empty promises club" meeting on Wednesday nights.

Steeb, some of us are good at coding and some of us are not, some of us are good at documenting and some of us are not, some of us are good at testing and reporting 'undocumented featuresBig Grin', and some of us are not, but we all just want to get the most out of the best PVR software available around (IMHO -and in the respected opinions of many others)

PM /blader_se for a login account - there is a sandbox if you want to play about for a bit - but if you have a valid contribution to make to the wiki, then go for it - the community won't let you go far wrong (in a polite way)

That's where I fit in for sure. That is the benefit of user contributions. I absolutely love the setup for GBPVR. sub has full control over the main project so things get done on that front. He has built in an unbelievable plugin architecture so that things that are not priority for him can be accomplished by someone else without sending the main project off on a tangent. (Netflix is not exactly a valued addition for sub). And then there are the people who can explain in simple, non technical terms what those of us in the middle group are doing. All vital parts of the community.
