I tried VLC player last night. I could see a very nice HD picture but it was freezing every second or so. Haven't had time to investigate but I guess there are some options to set up in the player?

There are lots of options, but it should run out of the box ok.
What machine are you running it on? h.264 HD takes a fair old bit of horsepower to display.

Quote: As my revised sig below:

The P4 won't cut it unless you have a hardware decoding video card. I have a 3ghz celeron, and my 8600GT works fine to decode H264 (720p & 1080i)

I'm a greenhorn as far as video cards are concerned. Is anything with a Nvidia 8600GT chip OK? Is that the bit that does the h/w decoding? What about the video card memory? How much is OK?

Thanks for the help.

I've been running with the EVGA 8600GT just fine. However, since prices are so low, if you have the extra few dollars, go with 512 memory instead of 256. But, I've seen no problems with my 8600. Lots of regular driver updates have kept up with things.

yes vlc will
but if your video card/pc isnt up to it vlc wont help
the next problem is you will have to pay way to much for a agp card so its almost worth looking at an upgrade

Yep, agreed. Adding to this, remember that H.264 HD (used outside of North America) is much much harder on a PC than the MPEG2 used in North America. You'd need a much bigger PC to play HD in these countries, regardless of what software you're using.
