Just thought I'd update everyone on this:

on the mini pe side of things, I downloaded the latest iso and it looks pretty good. Not really what this thread was originally about but I think I will look into getting a stick up and running with it on so I can use it to rescue stuff.
I could not get it to work off a stick though, flashboot complains that it isn't based on SP2 or something similar so refuses to build it.

I did find a tool called PEtoUSB which is free and I had more luck with this, it doesnt use an iso as input it just uses a directory with all the files/folders in to build the stick. This means that you have to extract the miniPE iso to a directory before you can run PEtoUSB. Unfortunatley my computer just gave a "failed to boot" message with this though. It may be that I have to go the Bart PE route.....

On the original subject of this thread (a simple partition imager from USB) Acronis has an option to build a stick, I tried it out and it seems to fit the original bill perfectly, it uses about 50mb on the stick, then it boots off the stick straight to a cut down version of Acronis. I think there are even command line options available when you build the stick that would let you automate even further but I havent played with that yet.

have you tried the windows vista WAIK toolset to create a bootable image / fileset ?? i use this with a usb hard drive - 4 partitions on it - using waik as my boot "cd" and the boot loader im using is grubinst so i can choose which one i want to run.

took a little bit to get it going but now i can boot to 3 different images and my data is all stored on the 4th partition

On the subject on MiniPE on a USB stick... there appears to a ghost image version of MiniPe for loading directly onto a stick... I'm downloading it now to see if this fixes the problem

http://www.torrentz.com/62d3e9b5358c3ddc...8d067d67dd

I'd tried the latest MiniPE via flashboot onto another USB Pen and your right.... so I've back tracked through older versions of Mini Pe and it's appears the 2004 build is the only one which can be Flashbooted directly onto a USB pen... but since this included norton ghost and most of the utils I generally use, I'd not bothered to update....

Let me know how that goes with miniPE, I went down a different route and found a torrent for a BartPE iso which flashboot was ok with.

6 of 1 and all that...

Hmmm that's the version I have. All I see is DVD and ISO file as destination for creating boot media. I shall spend more time checking and reading.

If I open the full software in tools>create recovery media, I choose what elements I want on the bootable drive, then the next scrre you choose the target. At this point if there is not already a USB stick registered in my computer then the only options you have is DVD ISO, if a stick is in then I can choose that.

Also in the program group in START>PROGRAMS>Acronis I have Acronis home and another icon Bootable Media, which appears to be a shortcut to the same wizzard as above.

For some reason it didn't recognise my stick as being available. Possibly because of tee odd partitioning of it. Re-formatted and if has made it bootable and I can get my C,D and E drives on the 4gb stick (full compression). Not had chance to try a restore though.
