Have you tried the freezer trick? Won't get but a little out of it, if it works, but it might enable you get some stuff off of it.

There are a lot of reasons to not putting stuff into a RAID configuration in this thread right here. Unless you're going mirrored or raid 5, raid 0 is just a pain in the proverbial if one of your drives goes down.

Because the app is db based, apart from the pain of moving stuff there is no reason to be raid 0'ing I feel. Just my opinion of course, and really I'm no better as all my recordings are on one drive, but it's a single 1.5tb drive rather than a set, with movies etc on another 500gb drive.

I think I thought that having a RAID setup sounded cooler - like my PC could take on Google's server farm or something... I was also taken in by the lure of faster disk access, but as 'normal' speed disk access has never been an issue, and huge data loss is decidedly uncool I've changed my mind Big Grin

Sorry to hear about the disk dying, it's a royal PITA when that happens.
That;s the big problem with RAID 0 , twice the disks, twice the chance of failure for almost 0 gain in a HTPC rig given that you can already record 4 shows at the same time on a standard high capacity drive.

The other problem is that if your motherboard blows up and you can;t get a new one with the same raid controller, your screwed again. Same when you want to upgrade the motherboad in the future.

Recordings come and go - it's only tv. I not spending even more money to back it all up (god, please don;t let this come back to haunt me)

"It may not be neat" - no shit Martin!

You should send that to the Readers Drives section of Custom PC magazine, they might want to run an article.

"Well I first came up with the idea for a pc that looked like an Alien had exploded out of its' side after watching..."

Just FYI, mine wasn't RAID anything... just a single drive.

My backup drive is on another server in the house.

I don't want to start a competition, but...

First pic is my current home network domain server. Second is my semi-retired previous domain server.

Thanks god I'm not the only one then. You can't see my other 4 PC's in the shack. That's why I have a shack and a nice neat PCH in the lounge.

In the old days when I ran a phone BBS, There was a string or around a dozen 5.25", 10Mb SCSI drives on two controllers.

Now, the garage....................................

All my stuff is up in the attic - just a laptop and MVPs down here... Mrs ACTCMS hasn't been up there for years - which is why I still talk with a deep voice.

I'd love to have a client PC, smaller, less parts in my living room, and the server down stairs... but can't afford another PC right now.

Will have to put a pic up of my rig... it doesn't look that bad. Some friends who come over don't even realize there's a computer sitting in the room.

Although I'm gonna put this in with the new hard drive (which will be here today):
