I was thinking you could try a ps2-usb converter (usb > male ps2). But after a little search I'm not even sure they exist. Usb > female ps2 is easy to get.

After installing the "MCE Standby Tool" as suggested by pBS, I still could not get this to work, but I then tried switching the default sleep mode (using that tool) to Standby instead of Hibernate and now everything works fine. Before, putting my PC into standby left the fans running and that was not acceptable, but now this tool seems to have changed the default standby to a different state (fans off, but power light flashing) and now the remote's power button can be used to turn the PC on. It's not perfect, since I would like to be able to use hibernate, but this will do until I upgrade to my next PC one day... Thanks everyone for all your help!

One difference between Hibernate and standby is that for waking from standby you can use any keyboard-key, wake from hibernate can only be done by the power button of the system (or from the mce remote it seems).

That's what I thought as well, but I tried pressing all the buttons on the remote and only the Power button actually woke it up from Standby.

Well, let's just say that Windows works in mysterious ways.

It was also very important to me to use hibernate on my computers untill I measured my HTPC usage and found it uses 5W in hibernate vs 7W in standby.
