First disclaimer. Want to setup a simple box. Easy. Want to use multple cards (same type perhaps) strange HW, well expect to play for a while.

Can't comment on the MS Media center. I was GBPVR for a long time, now Myth - and that is only because I wanted to go linux.

GBPVR vs MythTV. You a linux or windows person, should play a big factor in this.

Live Help (not Wiki etc)
GBPVR - need help - here it is. No need to go elsewhere, help for anything, lots of helpful and knowledgeable people.
MythTV - not really sure where exactly the help is, seems scattered around TBH. It is there, but just seems scattered.

Extras - both good.
GBPVR - the commnuity hangs round here - so you wont get stranded.
MythTV - I've stuck with the standard extras.

Setup - Program
GBPVR - install it. (Or it was when I used it) (minute or two?)
MythTV - longer install, more steps but straight.

Setup - channels/program guide
GBPVR - a while back, but it was tricky
MythTV - also tricky.
When I mean tricky I mean tedious, steps rather than dififcult. But once done. ..I use a combination of Radio Times, Sky Website and EPG off the air.

Drivers - cards
GBPVR - windows so theoretically should be better - all cards have a driver
MythTV - linux - I'm quite experienced now, the driver support is pretty easy and good now.
My experience I picked the cards based on support and needs.

Features - not a like for like comparison
GBPVR - I'm afraid I cant comment here. I installed and it worked. I never tried much more with all the advancements that came over the years - ashamed to say never used the Web Front end, but that might be because I could easily use the MVP or GBPVR front end.

MythTV - very powerful - at one point seemed too many features, but I like em. But remember I installed Myth after gaining so much experience on PVRs from GBPVR. Here I do use the Web Front end.

Power Recording
GBPVR - bear in mind this was a while back. I want to record House on Thursdays sometime in the evening on Sky1. Really easy to setup, really intuitive.
MythTV - took a little getting used to, ended up more powerful and flexible, but perhaps not as easy to get to

Extra playback Devices ?
MVP - GBPVR supports easy, get the same menu up
MVP - MythTV - supports too, but it is an extra device, menus different.
But now I use a variety of devices its not such a issue everything being different

Playback
Can't comment, never used either for playback, except early on (GBPVR).
I believe both are good.

Remote control setup
GBPVR - again old stuff. Found it quite dificult to get what I wanted. I blame the hardware.
MythTV - a bit of work getting it setup customised.

Perhaps that should give you a clue Smile Like no clue at all.
They both work pretty good. If you are a newbie, I would plunge in with GBPVR. Easiest to setup. If you are a linux person - upto you. I found the SuSE setup with Myth a series of steps, but straight steps. However want to get up and running fast ? Go GBPVR. Get stuck post on this board, and you'll normally get quick help.

  1. It's free
  2. It is as capable or more capable than any other PVR software
  3. It has HD extender support with NMT devices (this is huge in my opinion)
  4. It supports multi-recording (this is also huge as it enables you to record more shows with fewer tuners)
  5. The support from Sub and others is unmatched anywhere
  6. It's DRM free

There is a caveat though. GBPVR takes a little more work and knowledge on the setup end than Windows Media Center. I'm a computer idiot and I have been able to get a reliable GBPVR setup going.

I have used MCE 2005 and Windows 7 Media Center. Both are very simple to use and set up. At first I thought I liked MCE 2005 better than GBPVR, but I quickly found limitations that were not present in GBPVR.

The way I see it, you can't go to Microsoft and say "hey, this feature of Media Center is broken or incorrect, can you fix it in the next release?" You'll just hear crickets in response. Rolleyes

MythTV is really nice and (probably) more powerful in the right hands. But GB-PVR, as previously stated, just works... aside from the occasional hiccup. Wink
