I also run Comcast basic cable without an STB. I get two types of stations showing up after a scan; those which have the channel identified, and those that show up as "encryped", but can still be viewed. In both cases, I found Silicon Dust to be accurate, and provide the correct channel #. Comcast was moving channels around until about 6 months ago, so I found I had to remap often. And many channels which were not encrypted disappeared.

They definately haven't replaced all the splitters and such. Those all still go from like 5-1000MHz. I do subscribe to HD programming using a digital box so they didn't put a filter on. Unfortunately I got a newer box (rng110), which is small and works great, but doesn't have a coax output. I get HD channels on that just fine.

I cannot believe that the card might be bad. It's only 1 year old and it's a HR-1600. Analog still works fine. Besides as I stated in earlier posts my friend who lives closer to Indianapolis went through the digital cutover and channel moves about 4 months before me and experienced the same problem. He no longer get's HD in the clear either.

I've seen what you've described before. I got channels that were identified and a ton that showed encrypted. With the encrypted ones I could only get static or a black screen without audio - seemed normal to me if they were really encrypted.

I haven't had to remap my channels in over a year since I got the HD card. Sept comcast went all digital, but that didn't affect my HD, just had to get small stb (and ir blaster) for the analog. Mid October they moved the HD channels with a stb from 200-260 up to 1000 and higher. Still I got my local HD until the week after Thanksgiving. Even watched the lousy Colts game in HD Sunday night after Thanksgiving.

Now when I scan I get absolutely nothing. Even plugging the cable straight into the TV I don't get local channels in HD. I was able to do that previously before I got HD stb.

All in all I'm glad I got some help in his forum, but it seems like a lost cause. I've called twice and either the techs are completely clueless or they're good at pretending to be idiots. Even went up to the local office and talked to someone there who was clueless too.

Does the Hauppauge WinTV7 application find your channels?

Currently that's not installed. I did try finding them using media center since I'm using windows 7 32bit, but it didn't detect any channels either.

Just so we're clear: when you scan with NPVR and WMC7, you get NO DIGITAL CHANNELS AT ALL, correct?
What about when you scan with your TV that has a QAM tuner: you keep saying you don't get locals in HD, but digital does not mean HD. Do you get ANY digital channels with the TV?

There are a handful of channels I can get when I plug the cable from the wall directly to the TV. I don't necessarily know if they are analog or digital. They aren't that sharp. I can take my old 20 inch non-HD tv and get the same channels as well.

Since I have a HR-1600 I do get channels, but they are on the analog input from a mini-stb with IR blaster. The digital tuner that I must scan and map freqencies to certain channels comes up with 0 stations found. It used to come up with 50-100 channels, mostly encrypted with the local channels and sub-channels scattered throughout.

WMC7 scans and detects 2 tuners. 1 stb and another with 0 channels. Previously it detected like 25 stations on the non-stb tuner.

Nope. Your situation is a complete mystery to me. You appear to no longer receive any digital channels on your cable on any frequency or encoding understood by either your HVR-1600 or your HD TV. Yet you have a digital STB that can receive the channels just fine. Even if all the channels are now encrypted, which isn't supposed to be allowed, your channel scans would reveal the encrypted channels. Aside from getting answers from the cable company, which is probably akin to getting the leprechaun to show you his pot of gold, I'm stumped.

Just one more thing I did not make very clear, apparently. I'm a Comcast Basic Cable subscriber, and three types of channels show up in a scan,

(1) Channels which are identified, and can be tuned (SD and HD)
(2) Channels identified as "encrypted" and can be tuned (SD and HD)
(3) Channels identified as "encrypted" but cannot be tuned.

I receive twenty or so channels, 75% of which are HD, the rest SD. Have you tried tuning each and every channel (a PITA, but I have done this) to see which are (2) and which are (3) ?

Good luck, George

@ga_mueller: plexman appears to get NO channels of any kind. this doesn't seem possible, but there it is.

@plexman: just to satisfy my curiousity, can you run a channel scan using the default frequencies option, and then again using the default frequencies 70+ option, then post your NPVR.log files.
