I have not tried it but Stattiks transcode script is apparently taking idx files and writes them to the mkv file when transcoding mpg/ts files.

After some experimenting I am now able to watch my recordings (transcoded) with subtitles on the PCH/NMT. The process is fairly simple and works at least for DVB-S embedded subtitles streams from CanalDigital.

1. Extract the subtitles using ProjectX. I dont have the settings here but ProjectX gives me all kind of subtitles formats including text based .srt files. With this there is no need for OCR'ing anything.
2. Convert the movie to .mkv using statikk's conversion script.(http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...PC-and-PCH)
3. Ensure that the mkv and srt file has the same name.
4. Enjoy the recording with subtitles. Obvioulsly the file will on the PCH/NMT be played using the native PCH/NMT Player Mono.

First up thanks to all who input here ...!

Reddwarf Wrote:I do that regularly too, but not all channels transmit teletext, for inst. BBC HD, History HD, Nat Geo HD and Discovery HD only have dvb-subtitles which you can only get as .sup/.ifo from ProjectX.

I'm obviously coming to this discussion late, so my learning curve is very steep, but it seems if the stream only has image-based subtitles then regardless of whether you set SRT in ProjectX, you don't get an srt file, which is what this thread is telling me as well:

http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/28312...es-from-ts

I had hoped the DVBS Stream (see Codec details from VLC) would give me srt teletext, but this seems NOT to be the case. I tried 845 as a teletext setting but still no joy. Is there, btw a way (a tool/viewer?) to find out categorically whether the DVBS stream has a text or image based subtitle?

Code:
Teletext:
n/a
Subpict.:
PID: 0x034D(CHI_0x10_p1_a1 )
PID: 0x034E(ENG_0x10_p1_a1 CHS_0x10_p1_a1 )

I'd like to see your settings if you have them? I still think mine are image (One stream is Chinese, One English). I can view both sups with supview.

What I cannot tell, even from the tech specs for my channels, whether there is teletext number or anything like that. Do these mean anything to any of you fellows?

Do you think mkvmerge would work too?

DVB subtitles are subpictures, so you need to OCR' them to translate into .srt.

BTW, I don't know about PCH/NMT but once you have a .srt file most players let you play .avi's and display .srt subtitles with it.-

I guess the reason my approach works is because I have teletext (telx) subtitles embedded in the DVB-S stream and not DVB subtitles?

I'd guess yes... my head is spinning
  • I got ProjectX to extract an sup file with the images (that I can view with supview)
  • DVDSubEdit then gave me a sup to srt conversion, but the resultant OCR was truly rubbish....

ccextractor didn't work (no teletext I guess)

My original idea of playing it direct to TV from my HDMI output on the laptop and bypassing the PCH altogether is suddenly looking very attractive.Big Grin

You might want to try Stattik's script after all. According to this post (http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post373472), sTranscode is able to merge idx files to the mkv.

Will that be hardcoded subtitles? If so that's better that nothing.

I have no idea, as I have never tried it. It was not until recently I realized that I was not playing with DVB subtitles but rather teletext subtitles embedded in my DVB stream.

Is there any CanalDigital channel that you know of that has DVB subtitles?

The HD channels usually has dvb subtitles, at least on CanalDigital cable, while most of the SD channels have teletext subs.
