I may dual boot for awhile to try it out but the requirements don't much different from W7 save for the touch pad crap....
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch

I think Microsoft's strategy of having a single OS for both a tablet and PC is going to lead to neither experience being too good. I think they would be better off if they forked their code base like Apple has essentially done where they have iOS for the iPad and their OS X for the PC. I guess in about 3 or 4 years we will know if this strategy pays off.

Having just given it a go on a spare (admittedly crap) laptop at work, that can only be seen as a good thing!

I'm trying to load the W8 preview in a VM (version 8) but it says that it encountered an unexpected restart and cannot continue. I'v tried both the 54 and 32 bits version. Is there some special settings requiered for W8 to run with VMware?

Install it in IDE mode, the controller inside the vm should not be AHCI.

Tried IDE-mode to no avail, it complains about not beeing able to read the product key and then reboots, again and again.

Got it now, the clue is to NOT use the easy-install feature of VMware.
