do not think yourself lucky because you do not live in the states, these " broadcast flags" run deeper then you think. it it pretty much covers all copyright material .. pretty soon you should not be able to rip dvds ( a force upgradable macrovision - called Macrovision2) if any part of windows ops finds this ripped dvd or try to play rip the dvd it will refuse to play.. and I am pretty sure this this macrovision2 is encoded into the video stream as a "water mark" so it is detectable via any digital broadcast.. and since you're using microsoft product, which is a US company thier software must comply to the new laws no matter where it is sold.. does anyone actually think microsoft is going to make to versions of thier software one for the states and one for the rest of the world?[Image: rock.gif]

pretty much it going to be a big pain in the *SS..

I am sorry but if your betting on windows support?? not likely, linux is the wave of the future.. especial if you want unresticted freedom...but at the same time windows is betting on this copyright protection bills in the states as a way to prevent linux entering mass market. and multimedia desktop. because basicaly it would make owning a copy of linux with in the states illegal to sell or have, if it capable of playing any multimedia content.. but fails to follow any portion of the guide line set out by the US goverment..

sub's comments are exactly right.

Perhaps bittorrent is not the way to go just write a file sharing system. I do not want to have us posting torrent files so people can download shows that is just asking for problems.

> I believe if its more of a private thing, then it wont cause
> any legal problems (even if it's not strictly legal).
My thoughts exactly.

But if I missed a show or had a conflict it would be nice to be able to download it.

reven,
tru calling is the show that I was thinking about when I realized how nice this feature would be.

Concerning the topic, I would like to know whether's there's any planned support for ATSC in GBPVR in the future (6 months, 1 year, etc) so would know what kind of broadcast flag-free capture card to get.

Right now I know of a few possible cards.

Dvico Fusion Gold 3 - OTA and QAM64/256 reception. BDA Driver. MCE Support

MYHD 130 - OTA and QAM64/256 reception. No BDA Driver

ATI HDTV All-In-Wonder - OTA reception. BDA Driver?

I know Sub doesn't live in the US but has there been any talk of ATSC support?

Yes, I will probably support ATSC in the near future. It will require BDA drivers.

Let me refine my original question. Any HDTV card sold after July 1, 2005 that does not honor the broadcast flag will be illegal. So if we want a HDTV card that doesn't honor the broadcast flag, we need to buy it before July 1.

Sub, what HDTV card will GBPVR support in the future? What should we buy? I know I'd like to stay with GBPVR, and on Windows, so this question is important to me.

I have no idea at this stage. If it has BDA drivers, then there is a good chance it will work in the future.

Didn't I read that the Courts have stated (recently, like within a week or two) that the FCC cannot be in the business of hardware design, specifically around the requirement of hardware observing and enforcing the broadcast flag?

UPDATED: This is what I was thinking about:

Yeah, I read something like that on slashdot a couple of weeks ago. The flag thing may not happen.

Ooh, the flag could still happen, it'd just have to be done through Congress... I'm sure the MPAA, RIAA, XXXX will be out in force to get it done.
