HDMI-CEC support (Consumer Electronics Control) i.e. remote control over HDMI)

for my client pc in the bedroom, I wrote a small sleeptimer app which (by user choice) either switches the TV off, or changes the source back to the STB channel.
It also kills NPVR (as I might have a series of shows playing, and I want the client pc to sleep.

When the PC wakes, it fires off a WOL command to the media server & PVR, and waits for connection before lanching NPVR.
Works really well (no more cannot find database messages)

Does that mean every device in your setup has to be CEC compatible though? [...] You don't want the TV turning off when the HTPC has finished recording if you're still in the middle of Call of Battlefield 5.

Basically for it to work accordingly every element of the "chain" has to be CEC compatible. Nice idea in theory, but at it's current stage prone to fall short (from my personal experience). Anyway, the harmony type remotes open so many different possibilities that HDMI-CEC seems pale and useless in comparision.

If i read HDMI-CEC, i have to think about Toshibas REGZA Link and oll the other native brand stuff ... if they would DO something compatible, it would be great. But even DLNA is pure gambling with stupid container/codec combinations and differing between distributors.

For most cases there's really an all-in-one remote control like Logitech's harmony and tweaking hardware the best way.

As an example: I can configure my toshiba lcd tv that it will go to standby, if the videoinput (mediacenter) goes into standby (no moving picture); the 5.1 sound system from teufel does the same: no audio input -> standby.

It works somehow better then all the pseudostandards (btw., where is LAN over HDMI as promised, or PowerOverLAN as promised and so on). A lot of empty promises from the manufacturers so that people buy the stuff.

From what I've read, CEC support still isn't available from standard video cards (Intel/Nvidia/ATI), and instead requires dongle hardware like the USB CEC.

If you'd been able to do it directly from any HDMI videocard, without requiring extra hardware, it'd be more interesting to me.

I use CEC to drive my Raspberry Pi which is attached to the back of one of my TV's. The Pi runs Kodi but I use XNEWA exclusively as that way I have the same interface across all sets in the house. My TV remote does not have any "transport" buttons so I have used a key mapper plugin to map the colour buttons to "Play", "Pause", "Stop". The remote has 4 "arrow" keys which are mapped to large skip / small skip / forward / back etc. The one remote to drive it all is brilliant and there is no need for an additional IR receiver etc. Really tidy set up with only a network cable, an HDMI cable and a USB cable. It also turns the Pi on and off with the TV. For this simplistic setup CEC is perfect. On my main setup I have a Harmony

I have 2 NUC's which I bought the Pulse-Eight CEC adapters for. Unfortunately I didn't do my full research and assumed that they would just work out of the box with NPVR as they do with Kodi. I'm trying to keep the same interface also so will maybe take a look at XNEWA.
